2 Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make in Your Real Estate Business
Aug 10, 2025
These mistakes are costing you more than you know. 😳
Have you ever had an "oh yeah, duh" moment?
One of those times where you suddenly realize something you've been missing that seems so obvious.
These moments can be both humbling and incredibly enlightening.
I had a couple of these moments last week that are worth sharing and re-reading.
Let's dive in so you don't have to learn them the hard way...
2 Lessons Every Business Needs ✌️
💡 Lesson 1: Don't assume people know things.
This past week I had the pleasure of delivering a keynote presentation titled "Smarter Moves, Better Results."
A lot of preparation and practice went into the talk but I made a mistake right in the beginning.
When planning and scripting the presentation, I assumed people would know who I was.
It wasn't a crazy assumption. The room was full of Realtors and I was being introduced before I went on stage.
But people don't always listen that well and bios aren't always as clearly written as you think.
In fact, I was talking to people afterwards and got a few questions about what exactly I did for a living.
Was I a mortgage banker? A Realtor?
It was a total 'oh yeah, duh" moment.
Suddenly, it was clear that I should have set the stage a bit better with my own brief introduction.
➡️ How to apply this lesson:
When it comes to your business, ask yourself this: what are you assuming your prospects and clients already know? Then, stop assuming.
Our businesses become second nature to us and we stop going over the basics with our clients because they seem so obvious to us.
Unfortunately, this is causing confusion and friction with your people.
It might even cause some awkwardness as your clients don't want to ask questions to avoid looking stupid.
One way to fix this is audit your processes for information gaps - especially with the help of an outside party who doesn't have the same blind spots.
Another strategy is to record the audio on your next new client meeting, get the transcript, and upload to ChatGPT. Ask ChatGPT to help you find any blind spots in your talk. Ask it where you may have incorrectly assumed the other person knew something.
💡 Lesson 2: Repeat the important things over and over.
In addition to assuming other people already know things, we believe that when we've told them once, they heard and fully understood us.
That's another big mistake.
We overestimate how much people are paying attention and how clear we think we're being when we communicate.
For example, the other day, I was speaking to a Realtor who has been following The Market Distillery since the beginning.
During the conversation, it became clear that she didn't really understand that I had a coaching program and why it was valuable to her business.
Cue my oh yeah, duh moment #2.
In any business, telling your prospects and clients something once is similar to just including it in the fine print that nobody reads.
Technically, we've told them, but it's almost certain that they won't remember.
Any time someone's making a real estate move, there's so much information being thrown at them, emotions are elevated, and regular life doesn't slow down to make it easier to focus.
Reminders and repetition not only help your clients do the right things, they help you secure your transactions from accidentally falling apart.
➡️ How to apply this lesson:
Ask yourself: what's the important information that you want to make sure your clients don't miss? Change it from fine print into a headline.
If something is important, tell your clients about it at least 3 times.
Make it simple enough that a 5-year-old could understand it.
Email it, text it, and say it verbally.
Try saying it in different ways in case one connects better than the others.
Tell them until they can finish your sentence.
It feels cringe, but it's actually just clear communication.
So, with these two lessons in mind, let me practice what I preach...
🚨 A limited opportunity for you 🚨
In case you didn't know, I coach Realtors to grow their businesses by mastering the one conversation their clients care about most: “How’s the local market?”
Applying my lessons will help you go from confused to confident - which radically changes your conversations with clients for the better.
Don't just take my word for it. Here's what Richard McDill (a founding member) said:
"Since implementing what I’ve learned, I've seen a noticeable difference in how clients respond. They trust the process more, make decisions faster, and feel reassured knowing they're working with someone who truly understands the market."
When your clients have questions and they don't know, they say no.
On the other hand, clarity leads to closings.
