Master Your Mindset: How Positivity Can Change Your Business

David Goggins would probably punch me for saying this, but your feelings matter a lot.
Each day, most everyone is driven by their feelings.
What do I mean?
Think about that time (perhaps a long time ago) when you felt really behind in a class right before a big exam or project.
We've all been there..
There's two main types of people:
- Those who say "what's the point? I'm already going to fail. Wanna go out?" π»
- And those who buckle down and pull the all-nighter to do as much as they can to change their result. π
Which type are you?
In either case, you 1οΈβ£ feel a certain way, 2οΈβ£ take action accordingly, and then 3οΈβ£ get a corresponding result.
Gaining self-awareness is a top priority. βοΈ
With this in mind, there is one thing we must do: know thyself.
Awareness of your personality, habits, and tendencies is a superpower.
If we take the time to think about ourselves and notice the patterns in our lives (feelings & behaviors), we can realize just how predictable we are.
We quickly learn that if ________ happens, it will cause us to feel ________, and we'll do ________, which typically results in ________.
For example, if the car behind us honks, we will feel apologetic/angry, and then we'll pick between extending our π or πto respond depending on the emotion we felt.
The same thing is true with your business.
Most days we just figure it out as we go - living each day as they come and based on how we feel.
We press the gas or let our foot off depending on our energy levels and motivation.
How you feel about the market matters. π
Last week, I did a poll on Instagram asking my followers (mostly Realtors) how they felt about the market.
The results were about what I expected: most people gravitating towards a slightly positive or little negative and a few feeling extremely positive or negative.
There's an important point to make here: most people who feel negatively about the market will likely fall into the category of people who decide to let up and wait for things to get better - believing their action is a waste of time.
Further, the research shows that people who are more confident and have a positive outlook are more likely to take action because they believe it will make a difference.
And surprise, surprise they get better results because they had a positive mindset and most importantly, took action.
Your thoughts control your actions, which generate your results.
Want to get results? Be positive. π
It's easier said than done - for sure.
But if you can put yourself in the best position to think positively about life, you'll take completely different action than those who are expecting the worst.
This is especially true for salespeople.
If you don't believe in what you're selling, why would your customers?
Here's three steps to take to become more self-aware so you can create a positive mindset instead of reacting to the negativity around you:
- π§ Step 1: Learn more about yourself. Very few people invest the time to reflect and really learn their tendencies. We're surprisingly predictable if we start to pay attention and learn about our personality, habits, and reactions to common situations.
- π₯ Step 2: List your triggers. Think about what gives you energy and what makes you feel drained. What makes you mad? When are you usually disappointed? Make a note in your journal/phone and start tracking this as you feel strong emotions and see what patterns emerge.
- π§βοΈ Step 3: Brainstorm how you can create positive triggers and eliminate negative triggers. Our environment plays a huge role in how we feel (because we're not too great at regulating our own emotions). Are certain people making you feel more negative? Are others more uplifting? Purposeful design your environment to support your goals instead of getting in the way.
We can use this mindset to better connect with our clients, see new opportunities, and enjoy the ride a bit more.
